New GEDCOM uploaded

43 people added.  8 unique surnames added.

I wish I had more interesting news, but right now I'm just trying to get my available information online.

New GEDCOM uploaded

Can you tell I'm on a roll today?  ;-)

26 new individuals added, 4 additional unique surnames.

New GEDCOM uploaded

I'm breaking my rule and updating the online database more often than before.  I'm adding more people every day and am getting about one new user per day on the website, so it just seems logical to update data more often (and keep people coming back)!

The new GEDCOM added 19 new individuals and 5 unique surnames.

On my to-do list is to create an individual list that isn't password protected.  This way you can see if it's worth your time to sign up.

New GEDCOM uploaded

I transferred the latest GEDCOM from my computer program (I'm using Reunion for MacIntosh now... I LOVE it).

I'm still trying to get all my data in the database, but it's a slow process.  Bear with me.

I don't have the prior statistics, but now there are 152 individuals and 36 unique surnames.

I also made the online database password protected.  I'll give a login to anyone that requests one, but I'm trying to keep track of new cousins that come my way.

OUTSTANDING day

Today was a fabulous genealogy day.  First, I found the Mystical Binder of Bruner Heritage!!!!  I went over the my parents and myself, the parents, and the husband all went through tons of boxes that were collecting dust.  After giving up hope, I went upstairs to do one final sweep of the two extra rooms and didn't find the binder their either.  Went back to the garage (where the parents were still tossing stuff out) and my mom said they found a box of papers that I should take home.  In the box was a binder full of yellowed paper.... no way... could it be?  The binder was black and I remember the binder to be red, but I opened it and screamed with delight.  There it was: a binder full of information on the Bruners, Perrys, Raglands, and more!  A lot of it had citations too, which is way more than I expected.  There were even copies from old census records, old bible records, marriage indexes, obituaries, newspaper clippings... man, how lucky is this?

A lot of it is on regular paper that is already yellowed and crisp.  Some is even on thermal paper and faded to be borderline-unreadable.  So, my project now is to get it all scanned and thrown on my server space so I can't lose it again.  The hard copies will be put in archival-safe plastic sleeves and put in with my records.  All the data will be entered into my database so I can easily access it.

The second thing that happened is almost as good: I found my copy of "Garrisons of Albermarle" by Margaret Garrison Stavitski.  This is going to be invaluable.  Already it helped me get past one of my semi-brick walls.  I'm so relieved.

Of course, now it's Sunday and I have to go to work tomorrow.  If I had sick days available I'd contemplate calling in sick tomorrow and just doing database entry, but I have to save my days for maternity leave.  So sad.

And yet... so thrilled!!!  What an outstanding weekend!

Useful Google Search info

Ancestor Search Blog: Google's WildCard in Genealogy Searches

Starting them early...

I'm sure my husband will drink a lot more if one of our offspring happens to find an interest in genealogy.

Here's a way I can make sure this happens:
Family Tree Magazine, Kids! Edition

Of course, he IS rather tolerant when I say "I need to do a cemetery run this weekend."  Or "I need to do an obit lookup at the library."  Or he gets in the car when I pick him up for work and I've got a genealogy podcast on the radio.  Or I spend $99 on genealogy software (just purchased Reunion for Mac... love it so far).

Maybe he's not hopeless.

Genealogy only... and update

This blog is going genealogy-only.... all baby-related stuff will now be posted at Alix's own blog, Alix the Future Baby Geek. I tried to deny my baby-blogging impulses, but the little thing really deserves her own place to store pictures, stories, and doting letters from Gramma.

The family newsletter idea is being put on hold.  My main reason is that I really want to make sure I have a good grasp of the genealogy stuff before I start offering it up to others for a price.  Of course, all my research is available online (without info on living people, naturally) and will continue to be.  I just don't have the energy right now to start a new project even though I desperately want to.  The third trimester is rapidly approaching and I'm feeling the energy drain.

Latest GEDCOM uploaded

I just uploaded my latest GEDCOM to my GenealogyAddiction.com website (I do most of my work on Ancestry.com because I love their "Ancestry Hints" feature, then I export it to my main database).

Statistics and notes:
- added an additional 130 individuals
- added an additional 28 unique surnames
- earliest birth moved from abt 1826 to 1783

I also am keeping track of where my ancestors emigrated from on my home page.  This is done with good old-fashioned math, and, while math is my strong suit, I have a killer flu right now, so if someone sees something off with my arithmetic, please let me know.

My ancestors immigrated to the U.S. from:
3/32 came from Germany

1/16 came from Wales

1/16 came from Canada

9/16 is still undetermined

I also just discovered that one of my Canadian ancestors had a parent that immigrated to Canada from Scotland.  I just didn't want to have to deal with the math for that right now.

Interesting note: all of these ancestors are on my mother's side.  My father's side seems to have been here a while.

It does look like I might have a Revolutionary War veteran on my mother's side also.  Obviously it's not showing on this upload.  Waiting to do more research on that.

Okeedokee... nap time.  Gotta kill this flu so I can go back to work someday.
